The Lovers of Teruel

Book Summary

This work by Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch recovers the tragic medieval legend of the Lovers of Teruel, one of the most iconic love stories in Spanish literature. The reader will find a romantic drama in which honor, destiny, and passion intertwine in a plot of unfulfilled promises and sacrifice. The play offers a deep reflection on the limits of love and the consequences of social decisions, presented through vibrant theatrical language and a classic structure that has endured over time.

What is it about?

The action takes place in Teruel, where wedding bells ring as Diego de Marcilla returns to the town after gaining wealth and fame in numerous battles. Diego has been in love with Isabel de Segura since childhood, but the difference in social status separates them: he is the second son of a modest family, while she belongs to an important lineage. Nevertheless, Isabel's father agrees to give him a five-year period to amass a fortune so that he may marry her.

When the deadline arrives, Diego returns triumphant, but discovers that Isabel has just married another man. Desperate, he asks her for a kiss as a final gesture of love, but she refuses out of loyalty to her new husband. Diego cannot bear the rejection and dies on the spot. The next day, during the funeral, Isabel approaches her beloved to give him the kiss she denied him in life, and after doing so, she also dies. Tradition holds that they both died of love, for which they were buried together, and together they have remained in this work that immortalizes their legend.
