Description
Journey Around the World
Book Summary
This book narrates the incredible journey of Martín Ignacio de Loyola, a Franciscan missionary who, decades after the first circumnavigation, undertook his own voyage around the world. Through its pages, the reader will discover a firsthand chronicle of the challenges, dangers, and cultural encounters that marked his route from Spain to the Philippines, China, and his return to Europe. A work that combines geographical adventure with the history of evangelization in the Far East during the 16th century.
What is it about?
The account begins on June 13, 1581, when Martín Ignacio de Loyola sets off for Mexico with the dream of traveling around the world. From there, he travels to the Philippines in 1582 alongside thirty-one Franciscan missionaries, where he begins his evangelizing work. His goal of reaching China leads him to face attacks that almost cost him his life, being assisted by the captain-major of Macau, Arias González de Miranda. After passing through Malacca on December 31, 1583, he returns to the Iberian Peninsula following the Portuguese Route, arriving in Europe in 1584. Once in Spain, he meets with the Council of the Indies and the Father General of the Franciscans, obtaining the bull of Custodian of China from Pope Gregory XIII. In 1585, he departs once again from Lisbon with twenty missionaries for the East, thus closing a cycle of travel, diplomatic management, and missionary commitment.
