African Crossing in a Seat 600

Book Summary

In 1971, six young Spaniards dared to defy the impossible: to cross Africa from north to south aboard three Seat 600s. This book reconstructs that 25,000-kilometer feat across hellish roads, from Morocco to South Africa, in a race against time that combined adventure, endurance, and a good dose of madness. A vibrant chronicle of a journey that defined an era.

What is it about?

Nearly half a century ago, six young Spaniards embarked on a journey that seemed like madness: to cross Africa from north to south, from Morocco to South Africa, aboard three Seat 600s. With the support of the brand, the patronage of the then-Princess Sofía, and the amazement of the press, they began their journey on May 18, 1971. Over the course of two months, they traveled 25,000 kilometers on hellish roads, driving day and night in a sort of devilish race. They crossed twelve countries—Morocco, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Rhodesia, and South Africa—until reaching Cape Town on July 21. One of the vehicles dropped out, but the other two completed the feat. The book narrates this epic adventure, combining the account of the events with the historical and social context of the time.
