THE BLACK GANG. FIRE AND BLOOD IN BARCELONA

Book Summary

This historical essay immerses the reader in the violent years of "pistolerismo" in Barcelona, between 1918 and 1923, when the city became a battlefield between anarchist gunmen and the white terrorism of the employers' associations. The work focuses on the figure of the fake Baron König, an adventurer and spy who recruited an army of thugs and criminals known as The Black Gang. Through rigorous research, the book unveils the inner workings of a street war marked by attacks, ambushes, and an escalation of violence that transformed the city's history.

What is it about?

Between 1918 and 1923, Barcelona experienced a period of extreme violence. The city, which was bustling with the arrival of showgirls, hitmen, and smugglers from all over Europe, was the scene of a fierce struggle between anarchist gunmen and the so-called Free Syndicate (Sindicato Libre), a white terrorism group supported by the employers' associations, the authorities, and the official police. Week after week, explosions, attacks, and shootings increased the death toll.

The situation worsened with the emergence of a key character: an adventurer and con man who called himself Baron König. This fake aristocrat, who worked as a spy for France and Germany and was involved in revealing the secrets of the Enigma machine, set up an office in the heart of Barcelona under the cover of a detective agency. From there, he recruited a small army made up of thugs, informants, and professional criminals from the underworld. This criminal battalion, known as The Black Gang, was dedicated to committing numerous crimes against anarchists and labor leaders.

After König's disappearance, his members were hunted down and, in many cases, liquidated by libertarian action groups that were preparing an armed insurrection across the country. However, their violent style was imitated by the terrorists of the Free Syndicate, thus prolonging the bloodbath on the streets of Barcelona.
